Details

This presentation will describe the Bridge School Walker Program from 2006 to 2015 in which 29 students (3 to 12 years) with physical disabilities experienced self-initiated mobility using hands-free support walkers. A feature driven approach for walker selection, adaptations, tips for success and videos of student progress will be shared. Learning Objectives: 1. Gain a new perspective on the physical, cognitive and psychological benefits of encouraging self-initiated support walker mobility for young children with complex physical disabilities 2. Identify features of walkers and adaptations that allow children to have greater maneuverability across environments 3. Identify four questions to ask before choosing models of support walkers to try with a young child with physical disabilities 4. Describe at least three activities a child can participate in while standing and moving in a support walker
